That's what I kept thinking as soon as I started seeing the barren black patches of land from lava flows from years back. There were only a few scraggly trees and bushes that provided spots of green in the gloomy though interesting landscape. The land of shadow is a perfect name for it. It was a real educational experience to see an active volcano and see how it has wrecked so much destruction in its path and yet managed to give a kind of dark beauty to the landscape.
Here are some pics from our weekend at the Big Island of Hawai'i. We flew there on a tiny little plane and spent 2 days exploring the different vistas that the Big Island had to offer. From Malboro country ranches of horses and cows to stunning tropical forests to soothing pine groves.
